Our Great Dane Home Page
This page is dedicated to Great Danes and in particular to Chaos!

Here are some pictures which show how we feel about our dog.  Of course, we don't have any cartoon pictures of Great Danes, but the ones from Garfield will do.
This is Marie-Claude, and she'll say hello to you as soon as she prys herself free from the beast   . . . er . . . dog
and this is me
and here is a picture of our Great Dane, Chaos!

Introducing Chaos!

I don't remember if I told you about the new addition to Clan Groome - a Harlequin Great Dane pup.  Pup?  120 lbs  of horse, 32" at the shoulder, and still growing - for yet another year or so I am told.  He is 9 months old today.  CKC name is "Free de Jodanard" but I call him CHAOS!  (Yes, with the !)  Fitting . . .   When we registered him with CKC, I told Laura I wanted to call him "Chaos!  You s.o.b.!"  But she said it was undignified . . . I asked her if she had ever seen a "dignified' seven month old Great Dane . . .

He graduated basic obedience training last Tuesday evening, together with his lady friend, a little Heinz 57 that weighs about 20 lbs and stands all of 15".  She pummels him smartly every time they meet, and he seems to love it.  Typical male, eh?

Why does anyone want a horse for a dog?

I ask M-C that question daily, if not hourly.  A friend of M-C's had two of 'em.  Lived up north on a zillion acres.  Got divorced and had to move into an apartment in town.  She was going to have to put them down.  Told M-C about them.  We went to see (always a fatal move!), and came home with the most beautiful and intelligent of the two.

His Presence is too big for a city house, but I must say he does keep out of one's way.  Well, most of the time   .  .  .    I wouldn't have gotten another dog.  Period.  Want to be free to travel now that I am retired.  But, having had experience with Irish Setters, Border Collies, and more German Shepherds than I can shake a dog biscuit at, I must say I love the Great Dane most of all.
They have the most remarkably gentle personality, soft gentle mouth (thank God!), and really become one of the family.  At least once a day, I find myself groaning, "Oh God! I am talking to him like he is human!  Which he is.  Almost.
His Presence is something I could have happily done without had it been my call, but, having had him for nine months, I must confess I love him dearly - sort of a "love-hate" relationship, I suppose.  Still, M-C really wanted him very much, so I guess that is part of the give-and-take of marriage. *sigh*
Oh, bloody hell! M-C is now servin' His Presence tea, en in our best A&W china to boot!  En he's settin' in MY chair, by the pitcher window . . .

His Presence demands to be fed and, since it is my turn to make like the Cordon Blooie again this evening, I had better get crackin'.
So, lamb chops, smashed spuds, mixed veggies, gravey, dog food, etc., here I come . . . . Will know who got whut after we has ate.

Oh God!  Tonight is "Trip To The Vet Night" again!  It was so embarassing last time, trying to struggle 137 lbs of recalcitrant horse up onto the table . . . especially when this tiny, 90 lb, female vet put her arms around His Presence and lofted him into place without so much as a grunt.  Mind you , I suppose if she had put her arms around me I would have leapt up on the table too  . . .  oh for the days of my misguided, but glorious youth - flying and Mess parties and prayer meetings!
