Animations are a sequence of images which are used like frames in a movie to give the appearance of movement. The multiple images which make up an animation are stored in a single GIF file. The GIF file format that is used on the Web for animation is one of the versions of GIF format which is called the GIF89a format. This format can store both single-image GIF files, as well as multiple-image files.
GIF89a files are recognized by the major Internet Web Browsers such as the Internet Explorer, Netscape Navigator Version 2.0, and Netscape Navigator Gold 3.0, and these can all play the animations without installing any extra programs.
