MAY 18, 2004: Alright, it's been a while, lots of updates to make, so here we go....
November 12th, 2003: Fomer Camp Dunmore owner, and Co-Founder of Camp Dunmore for Boys, Ed Jacobson, was kind enough to write in to share with us his observations on the status of the former Camp Dunmore grounds since the Camp closed down several years ago, as well as what Keewaydin has done with the place. This makes for a most fascinating read. Please click here to continue...
November 11th, 2003:
November 6th, 2003: Unfortunately, more sad news to report... Former Head of (Wood)Shop, and all around sweetheart and nice guy Joel Cadoff passed away yesterday after a long battle with cancer. October 24, 2003: I received some very sad news last night: Perrenial Camp Dunmore legend and institution Ernie Buntin has unfortunately passed away... Ernie was apparently sick since last March, and died on October 18th of a heart attack while on a trip to Mexico. Our sincere condolences go out to Ernie's family during this difficult time. If anyone would like to get in touch with his family, the address is 9 Lemay Drive, Barry, Vermont, 05641. If anyone would like to share their favorite thoughts and memories of Ernie, please send them to me, and I will create another page on this site that will gather all these memories together.... Also, for those interested, I found this while surfing around on the Internet... it's from March 2003, and it's a tribute in the high school newsletter to Ernie, who had just retired from teaching there at that time: http://www.vita-learn.org/shs/tidepride/tpjan03.pdf RIP Ernie!!! You'll be missed... Nunway...
September 22, 2003:
(May 2003) Does anyone know, or have access to, the lyrics to the song "I Can't Dance" that used to be played at camp? If so, please e-mail them to me... thanks! Congratulations to Rob Zeidel, and to Brad Rosenberg, two very good friends of mine, from Dunmore and beyond, both of whom got engaged recently!!! Rob and his fiancée have a May, 2003 wedding planned, and Brad and his fiancée have a Summer 2003 wedding planned. Congrats and all the best to you and to your respective families!!!
It is with great sadness that I write of the recent passing of Camp Dunmore Legend, Milt Singer. At this time, I would like to express my deepest sympathies to his family and friends during this most difficult time. He will be sorely missed... Here are a few words from his son, Larry Singer: Just wanted you to know, Milt Singer died in his sleep on November 26, 2001. He was watching Monday night football, fell asleep and was gone. He was a few days short of his 90th birthday. We're sad but knew it was coming for the last few weeks. Until April of 2001 he would have seemed almost unchanged to anyone who experienced him at camp. His first real illness was in May and June. It weakened him considerably. Still, he was able to get up to the lake and enjoy it over several long weekends. He even smoked several cheap cigars while contemplating Lake Dunmore sunsets. He saw old friends like Jim and Ellie Bosman, Eddie Jacobson and Mary Conner. Although he grew weaker steadily throughout the fall, his final illness was brief, only a few days really. But, he was communicating and aware of his surroundings until he fell asleep last night. He had a long healthy life and affected the lives of many people in a profoundly positive way. He met eveyone with a spirit of good-will. Most people responded to that and gave him the best they had to give. For those who read this site and who knew him, think of him once in a while. He was a happy and competent man who met all of his repsonsibilities head on. He wants us all to be the same way. Laugh about the old days at camp. More than anything, I think he would want you to do that. Maybe, once in a while, read the sabbeth camp service which can be found on this site. He loved that service. It was his favorite religious experience. Sincerely yours, Larry Singer
On August 24-26, 2001, a bunch of us all made a pilgimage, coming both from near and from far, back to the comfort and familiarity of Middlebury, and of Camp Dunmore. Once again, this was a fantastic weekend! Very different both in the headcount and in the general feel of it, but I personally found it to be very enjoyable and rewarding-- and I don't think that I am alone in feeling this way. Just being in Vermont makes me feel younger, free of my worries, and of the stresses of being 27, and trying to negotiate obstacles while finding my correct path in life.
Speaking personally, I had an opportunity to hang out with old friends, some of whom I speak to more than others these days, but in all cases, once reunited, we always pick up right where we left off... which usually means our best impressions of little, immature children. I also had the great pleasure of meeting several alumn's, all solid people who had stopped going to Camp Dunmore a few summers before my first one in 1987. Even though we didn't know one another, we all shared a connection in camp. I had seen their names written on the walls of the bunks so their names were familiar to me, and it gave me some historical perspective, which made it all the more interesting to hear their vivid recollections of summers past. On the flip side, they were interested in hearing our tales of the last summers of Camp, for after all, though the years go by, many things still remain the same: wedgies are still wedgies, and Three-Fingered Willie still lives on, not to mention the fact that we all know some of the best places in the area to drink... like the Cascades at The Falls of Lana, and Angela's Restaurant in Middlebury :-)
. Among activities, we had many drinks, we walked near and around the Camp area, we had great meals both at Fire & Ice and at Rosie's, many of us watched a great slide show, some of us went up to the Falls to enjoy nature, and to have a couple'a pints, and we shared in many an anecdote and a laugh... and oh yeah, did I mention that we had a few drinks? Can you say "D.-O.D."? :-) Oh, and in true Dunmore fashion , another marginal, trivial, yet hilarious game/activity was created, much in the spirit of "Frisbee Garbage Can", showing just how much ingenuity and resourcefulness Camp Dunmore has instilled in us all. This game was called "Golf Ball in the Paddleball Wall Hole"... 'Nuff said, kinda self-explanatory.
I would like to thank everyone who attended this summer's reunion, and for contributing towards its success. Hopefully, next summer, we will be able to have yet another one, and we will all be able to reunite at that beautiful place we called home for 1/6 of each year when we were kids.
Here is the list of those who attended, in no particular
order:
This site can now be accessed by pointing your browsers at http://www.CampDunmore.com, which redirects automatically towards this site. This should make it easier for people to have access to this site, who may not otherwise be in a position to know about it. Many thanks to Bruce Rutenberg, who was the mastermind who set this all up. Everybody at the count of three, now: "Bruce Rutenberg, best alumnus, ..."!
